About the Department

Ege University Philosophy Department which was founded in 1978, is a comprehensive department that carries on research and education in all basic areas of philosophy and embodies various philosophical approaches.  

Like various philosophy departments, our department shows a specific character composing of some priorities and choices which differentiates it from other departments.

First of these is to place history of philosophy at the foundations of teaching philosophy. We stipulate that without equipping a comprehensive and adequate education on history of philosophy, one can comprehend neither the problems of contemporary philosophy nor specific problems of any philosophical discipline. Therefore, our bachelor programme consists in a strong history of philosophy education.

Another feature that gives character to Ege University Philosophy Department is the understanding that philosophical problems should be associated with actual problems of humanity.  Therefore, along with the stress given to practical philosophy, our department features a special interest in political philosophy.  

One other feature that should be counted along specifying characteristics of our department is İslamic Philosophy studies. İslamic Philosophy is exstensively studied in our department, both for its place in general history of philosophy and for possibilities it presents for thinking on contemporary issues, and alongside philosophical philosophy holds an important place in our curricullum.

Lastly, Ege University Philosophy Department encourages its students to re-think of issues/topics traditionally placed outside philosophywith the possibilities presented by philosophy. As an indicator of this tendency our courses include lectures that aim to found relations between philosophy and litetature or think modernisation practices of Turkish society philosophically.
